about

My motivation in writing “Stillness” was to create a piece of music that would induce a calm state in the listener. It’s interesting to me the way that music can so dramatically effect our mood. The right piece of music can get us amped for the day, chill us out, or bring us to tears. I know my go-to songs when I need to take the edge off.

In the spirit of chill, I incorporated things that I find relaxing. I used a very slow tempo - around the average sleeping heart-rate. I included forest birds, soft pads, and emulated breathing through white noise.

The main element of the piece, the piano, was inspired by mindfulness meditation. I wanted to create these big spaces in between the phrases of the piano where the listener could observe the decay of the delays and reverbs of the piano, much like a meditation with a singing bowl - trying to hear every last piece of sound before it disappears into silence.

While listening, I found myself breathing to the rhythm of the piece which was surprisingly calming. So, I decided to build the rest of the piece around this idea of breath work. Here’s how to do the breathing meditation:

* BREATHING MEDITATION *
Using the kick drum as your guide, breathe in for 4 counts and out for 4 counts. Throughout the piece there will be other bells to bring you back if you get lost in thought.

I hope this track brings you peace. 🤍🐘
